South Cinder Peak
October 12, 1991
Four intrepid hikers set out from the S.E.H.S. parking lot at 7:00 a.m.
They met the leader near the Santiam Pass.
We caravanned to the Cabot Lake trailhead after an unplanned detour on Jack Lake Road.
The dusty trail led us past Cabot Lake and several tarns.
A shortcut put us at the P.C.N.S.T., from which we ascended South Cinder Peak.
The 360-degree view on the breezy summit was superb, from nearby Mt. Jefferson to the north and
the Sisters, Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top, the Husband, Mt. Washington and Three Fingered
Jack to the south.
The huckleberry/ blueberry bushes showed varied hues from orange to deep red as we descended past
Shirley and Carl Lakes.
This motivated hiking group included Paul Frantz, Dorothy & Frederick Munz, Hal Owen
and Ralph Nafziger (leader).
