Rock Mesa-Wickiup Plains

The Rock Mesa area west of the South Sister remains beautiful and unmined thanks to the
taxpayers among us who bought out the mining claim from people who would have built roads to haul
out the pumice for commercial purposes.
The trail into the area is well defined to encourage restoration of the fragile plains.
LeConte Crater provides a good view of the plains and the South Sister.
The plains were golden in color, reflecting the warm sunny late summer day.
The only negative aspect of the trip was the profusion of horses on the trail which made for
One horseman advised us to get off the trail a fair distance because “his horse kicked!”
Only one other hiker was observed on the trip; it is a beautiful area and an easy walk,
so hikers should be encouraged to reclaim the Wickiup Plains/Rock Mesa area.
Hikers were Jan Beals, Gladys Grancorvitz, Maxine Hall, Gary Marx and Mary Ellen West, leader.
