Shale Lake

August 3-4, 1991

Eugene, Corvallis, Lebanon, and Salem hikers met at Marion Forks Restaurant and drove to Pamelia Lake Trailhead. With an elevation gain of about 3,000 feet, the distance of about seven miles was covered in four hours. There was no water available along the trail. At the Shale Lake area, we filtered snow melt water for drinking. Snow had been off this area for less than two weeks; however, the shallow lakes were warm enough for us to enjoy a refreshing swim. Our camp site had a picturesque view of the lakes with Mount Jefferson in the background. Mosquitoes were moderate-to-bad in the evening and morning.

We returned by going south on the Pacific Crest Trail about one mile and then turning west (cross-country) for another mile to Hank’s Lake. Our return to Pamelia Lake was by way of the old Oregon Skyline Trail, which was in poor condition.

The enthusiastic group that enjoyed this beautiful but strenuous hike consisted of Mercedes Altizer, Barb Elsen, Jackie Fern, Richard and Robin Romm, Marge Sutor, Marty Welches and leaders Barbara and Edward Trione.
