Black CraterJuly 27, 1991For whatever reason (the hot weather?) three people cancelled and another two did not show up, so that left six of us to enjoy the trip up the McKenzie Pass in Dan Bates’ van, that is we enjoyed it until we ran into the loose gravel on the upper reaches of the pass where road re-construction is going on. By 10:30 we were on the trail and by 12:45 we were at the top where a steady breeze cooled things off and kept the bugs away. We had lunch, aligned the peaks on the map, took pictures and in general enjoyed the view until about 2:00 when we started down. Once headed for home, Kevin Clark was unable to persuade us to stop for a swim in any of the lakes along the highway. One hiker had arrived from Japan the week before. He came prepared to experience Oregon by bringing along a small photocopy of a geologic map of Oregon and a list of geologic terms in both English and Japanese. On Black Crater were Dan Bates, Kevin Clark, Ray Mikesell, Akira Ozaki, Diane Petersen and Richard Heinzkill (leader). |
