Lucky Boy MinesJune 27, 1991The Register-Guard weather forecast for this hike read “A pleasant day …” What a tremendous understatement! The lucky dozen who could do this Thursday hike stopped first at Ben & Kay Dorris Park for rolls and cookies and coffee and flush toilets before proceeding to the Quartz Creek trailhead. Many, many flowers were just coming into bloom from little blues to big reds and there were even some that the leader knew the names of! The trail up the creek to the mines was very enjoyable even though Alys thought the trail had steepened up in the seven years since she hiked it last. The beautiful location and interesting mines are still there but the old mining equipment is rapidly disappearing — even pieces weighing several thousand pounds. It will still be a very rewarding hike, however, even after the last artifact is gone. The congenial prospectors included Sylvia Harvey, Gerhard Hoffman, P. J. Jensen, Bonnie Manheim, Newt, Alys Riley, Hawke Williams, Carol Stern, Susan Stewart, Betty Taylor, Birgitte Williams, and Gene Thaxton (leader). |
