Malheur Wildlife Refuge
May 2-5, 1991
The trip to Malheur is really to Big Sky Country and an oasis in the desert.
The Steens were snow capped and magnificent to see.
Our party saw a total of 67 bird and seven mammal species.
My guess is that we were probably one to two weeks early for the spring peaking of birds.
The nights and days were cool, except the last day and night warmed significantly and brought
the first swarming of bugs with the usual bites and welts.
A side trip was made to the Diamond Craters and Round Barn and our return trip looped through Fields,
Denio, and Summer Lake, with birding along the way.
Enjoying this outing were Jane Hackett, Joe Lowry, Ardys Ringsdorf, Chris Shuraleff (on Saturday)
and leader Glenn Meares.
