Santiam PassJanuary 19, 1990The first Obsidian XC ski trip of the decade did have enough snow to ski upon — barely. One problem was getting over the wind-downed trees randomly scattered along the trail from the recent storm. The impossibility was crossing the ponds created by the stores. The ice didn’t hold as the leader’s wet rear demonstrated. We had started on the North Loop at Santiam Pass where we were blocked by the flood ponds. We retreated to the Pacific Crest Trail and escaped to the south. A swollen unnamed lake and creek blocked our progress and our response was to stop for lunch. The group, Genie Currier, Dallas Hemphill, Dawn Peterson, Kathy and Parker Riddle, Suzanne Steussy and leader Royal Murdock, returned to the uncrowded parking lot for an early return to Eugene. |
