An all Obsidian group left at 7:00 a.m. for the trip to “the other side.”
The trip was to this very special place the Obsidians helped to save from the mining machines
by the Pass-to-Pass hike of 1982.
Over the years the trail to Rock Mesa near South Sister in the Three Sisters Wilderness has been
rebuilt in places and the Forest Service has expended effort to rid the area of the old tracks
and establish a good connecting trail system.
Jane Hackett led a party of five up LeConte Crater after we reached the Mesa.
(I went up it last year but wasn’t up to it this year.)
That group also, at the urging of the leader, descended to the parking lot via the South Sister
climbing trail and accused the leader of sending them on the “goat trail.”
It was a great trip and although the sky never cleared completely, breaks of blue amid the
rolling clouds allowed us to see the new fallen snow on the South Sister summit which melted
as the day wore on.
A wonderful trip to this special place was enjoyed by Doris Allen, Dan Bates, Jane Hackett,
Maxine Hall, Marty Hathaway, Ardys Ringsdorf, Mary Ellen West and leader Vi Johnson.
