Saddleblanket LookoutMay 26, 1990A good size group left Eugene at 9 a.m. in good but high overcast weather. Had a rest stop at Johnny Creek Trail where George Mattox showed handicap trail built by Eugene Downtown Lions Club in memory of Realtor John Miksell. The Lions Club helps the Lowell Ranger District maintain the nature trail for blind and wheelchair persons. The hike to the lookout was uneventful except for patches of snow. Lunch was had at lookout at noon then back to leader’s van. A two-mile side trip was made to a beautiful meadow on Road #142 to see the marsh marigolds, trilliums and many other flowers just coming out. This meadow which Jean and I visit every year is the nicest we have found in the Willamette National Forest. Hikers were Ben Elkus, Sylvia Harvey, Mary Millman, Miki Hutchison, nonmember George Mattox and leader Donn Chase. |
