Mt. June

May 6, 1990

After adding several people from the cancelled N. Umpqua trip we left town at 9:05 a.m. on a cool May 6 with 10 Obsidians and 8 non-members, arriving at Mt. June Trailhead (Trail No. 1400) at about 9:50, and at the top about 11:20. The cool temperature propelled half the group past rather slow leader at intersection with Trail No. 1401 (Sawtooth Trail). Beauty of frost-tipped trees and ice-sheathed twigs sparkling in intermittent sunrays compensated for drooping wildflowers with petals half closed against the cold. View from top included white Sisters and their neighbors but only the tip of Diamond Peak. In order to boost the mileage of this outing (2.5 miles from cars to cars) we stopped at the trailhead of Trail No. 3462 to hike (and admire greatly) Helen Smith’s new trail (RT about half a mile) and to leave a note in her hard hat on a tree stump at trail’s end.

[Suggestion: Why don’t we put Helen’s trail descriptions of the Lowell Ranger District, and others’ trail descriptions in the Obsidians’ computer for regular updating and eventual publication?]

Final stop of the day was at the Eagles Rest Trailhead to add the 1.4 miles RT to the top to the day’s mileage log, which thus came to a proud total of almost four and a half miles hiked! Leader, who had lots of papers to grade yet, did not mind returning to Eugene earlier than is usual for Obsidian trips. Hiking members were Susan Baker, Genie Currier, Ben Elkus, Marty Hathaway, Carolyn Kompanik, Bonnie Manheim, Gary Marx, Sigurd Otto and Betty Staeck; and non-members Debbie Bernhard, Anne Bowine, Janice and Robert Carrico, Maggie Gontrum, Anne Hartheimer, Brian Hartley and Jane Tibbits. Bringing up the rear: Hank Plant (leader).
