Mt. Bachelor (Hooky Bus)
March 1, 1989
This ski trip departed promptly at 7 a.m. from the S.E.H.S. parking lot.
All of the group were together on bus one of three buses.
Bus one developed difficulties near McKenzie Bridge and the group of forty passengers waited two
hours for a replacement bus from Eugene.
We arrived at Mt. Bachelor about noon. The skiing was good.
Gene and Bea being adventurous souls accompanied John and Corinne to the top of the
Pine Marten Express lift to see the new Pine Marten Lodge.
After coffee and a look around we skied over to the Sunrise Chair which is across the mountain to
We returned to the base of Pine Marten and Bea and Gene headed for the Nordic Lodge and cross-country
Corinne, Alice, Maya and John skied downhill the rest of the day and the remainder of the party were
Since our bus was late the bus leader agreed to stay for another half hour until the lifts closed.
John wishing to get back for the Obsidian board meeting took one of the earlier buses.
What a mistake. There was a traffic jam on the Santiam Pass.
The bus slid across the road into a semi truck and trailer and tied up traffic for five hours.
No one was hurt but the buses did not return until after midnight.
The bus leader of the bus that had the Obsidian group called John the next day to compliment the
Obsidians on how pleasant they were in the face of adversity.
Gene said he really got his money’s worth of adventures on this trip.
Another trip will be scheduled next year but probably earlier or later in the season.
Participants in this day of skiing and misadventure were Bea Fontana, Gladys Grancorvitz,
Corinne Hunt, Alice and Maya Lachman, Marriner Orum, Dave Predeek, Velma Shirk, Gene Thaxton
and John Kocher (leader).
