Santiam PassFebruary 18, 1989There are five lakes within the vicinity of Santiam Forest Service Road 2076. Starting at the Corbett SnoPark the 12 of us (Norm Benton, Peter Boag, Genie Currier, Gladys Grancorvitz, Sue Harrington, Dorothy Little, Whitey Lueck, Velma Shirk, Suzanne Steussy, Hans Tschersich, Ken Zimmerman, and Dot Leland, leader), skied into Island Lake for a lunch break and were pleased that the weather wasn’t as bad as predicted. The day was cloudy. There was fresh snow-wet, but fast in the tracks. After lunch we took a look at Link Lake and stopped at the Hand Lake junction. From here Hans and Ken made a cross-country loop around Hand Lake and over to Torso Lake, where we regrouped for some hill skiing. The two advanced skiers then went by compass around Meadow Lake while the rest of the group skied back to the road and into Hand Lake. Pete and Whitey took a short-cut cross-country into Hand Lake. At this point we all skied together down the road to the SnoPark, ending the day with a few snow flurries — not 12". This, our 5th annual trip, provided some options for skiers’ abilities and ambitions, so it was enjoyable, fun and challenging for all. |
