Santiam Pass/Island Lake Shelter

January 7, 1989

We ten left in three cars under threatening skies. Friction devices were required and putting on chains (one car) slightly delayed our arrival at Ray Benson. Still, we were on the North Loop by 11:30 and enjoyed the powdery new snow and a packed trail to Circle Lake. From there the unbroken snow enhanced the beauty, especially since trail-breaking was so easy. We had lunch at the Island Lake Shelter at 1:30. The route had been marked by scattered sun and frequent snow flurries. After lunch, encouraged by strong head winds, Doris Allen, Norm Benton, Kim Gagnon, Diane Jeffcott, Vi Johnson, Sandra Larsen, Dot Leland, Dorothy Little, John Pegg and leader Royal Murdock, wasted no time skiing back to our cars. Our luck held and we were all able to sit together at Mom’s where we stopped for coffee on our way home.
