Scott Mountain

September 30, 1989

I expected “scattered showers” Saturday, but it rained almost continuously from the time I got up in the morning until I got back to Eugene in the evening. Four of us started out at the Scott Lake Trailhead and hiked northwest up the Hand Lake Trail. The trail follows lava beds for about half a mile and then continues past the north side of Scott Mountain. The rain continued without letup and the fog seemed to get thicker. There were occasional gusts of wind and some of us were getting damp and chilled. If we continued up the north side of Scott Mountain, it would have become only wetter and colder. We decided to backtrack the way we had come. We ate lunch in the shelter at Hand Lake. On our return to the car we had covered about nine miles. On our way back to Eugene we stopped at the Log Cabin Inn for hot soup, coffee and berry cobbler. In spite of the weather it was a very enjoyable outing for Doris Allen, Jerry La Fountain, Chris Steele and leader Dave Predeek.
