Eight hikers enjoyed a perfectly clear day to gaze back at Belknap Crater, Mt. Washington,
Three Fingered Jack, Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Hood from the upper trail above N. Matthieu Lake.
We ate lunch at South Matthieu Lake, and the leader briefly swam 20 strokes in that cool lake!
We then hiked alongside and through the lava to Yapoah Crater.
All eight reached the top of the crater in 5 minutes via the loose dirt trail.
We could see north clear to Mt. Adams; to the south, North and Middle Sister, Little Brother
and the Husband rose before us.
We all walked around the rim of the crater and sat down on the highest point for 20 minutes.
On the way back we stopped briefly at North Matthieu Lake, and then walked quickly as some
mosquitoes landed on us.
All of us ate something at Mom’s Pie Shop.
The eight hikers included Richard Sundt, Shyuer-Ming Shih, Marty Hathaway, Gary Marx, Tow Weisenfeld,
Irving Wohlfarth, Carolyn Kompanik and the leader, Bob Foster.
