Cowhorn Ridge

August 27, 1989

Beginning at Windigo Pass on the PCNST, we climbed steadily uphill through conifer forest enjoying views of Mt. Thielsen, Mt. Bailey, and Scott Mountain at Crater Lake. The trail is lined at various times with rock ledges and rock piles around a caldera of forest with views of Cowhorn Mountain. Through the trees we viewed Willamette Forest clearcuts, Sawtooth Mountain, just to the left of the trail, Windigo Lake and Amos and Andy Lakes as we passed the base of Cowhorn Mountain. We noted the trail to the top which Obsidians have often climbed, and continued on to a higher ridge where we had lunch viewing Summit Lake, Crescent Lake, Odell Lake, Emigrant Pass (route of the Lost Wagon Train) and the mountains to the northeast including the Three Sisters and beyond. Several participants noted this should be a regular hike on the schedule. Enjoying a new hike on a beautiful sunny day were Joe Freedman, Maxine Hall, Marty Hathaway, Richard Heinzkill, Greg Hill, Diane Jeffcott, Virginia Prouty, Henrietta Richmond, Chris Steele, Richard Sundt, Ton Weisenfeld, Irving Wohlfarth, Mary Ellen West and Vi Johnson (leader).
