Mt. Thielsen-Eastside Backpack
August 19-20, 1989
This was billed as a Mt. Thielsen circuit, but instead became the Mt. Thielsen shuttle.
Left the Pacific Crest Trail parking lot on Highway 138 about noon.
Traversed cross-country around and over the Southeast ridges of Thielsen.
No major route finding problems — though maybe a moment or two of confusion.
Chased pikas through the talus slopes, then arrived at our campsite at Cottonwood Creek in time to
watch Thielsen’s East face disappear in cold and windy clouds.
Sunrise brought clear skies, a glowing red mountain with a waning moon overhead, and a very
Climbed one last scree slope (I think I can … I think I can!) over the pass to Thielsen Creek,
then down the Howlock Mountain Trail to our shuttle car at Diamond Lake.
