Collier Cone

August 12, 1989

Nine of us walked down the Scott Trail on a slightly overcast day. No steep hill as in previous years; switchbacks make a former difficult spot easier. Four of the 9 enjoyed a view of Belknap Crater to Mt. Jefferson from the top of Four-in-One Cone and caught up with the others in the big meadow where Scott Trail joins the Pacific Crest Trail. Some other hikers were sitting in the meadow in unusual lightweight collapsible chairs. After passing through lots of lovely blue-purple lupine, we walked into a darkening store at Collier Overlook. Fortunately no lightning struck, so most of us hiked to the top of Collier Cone and enjoyed the great view from Belknap Crater to Mt. Hood and of the North and Middle Sister, Little Brother, and Collier Glacier nearby. Eleven-year-old Emily kept up with the leader. There were still lots of flowers at Sunshine Meadows. The hike to Obsidian Trailhead (Frog Camp) wasn’t so boring while talking with an Australian, Steven Glenday. Despite a few blisters everyone enjoyed the hike. The hikers included Emily and Christine Olson, Kristen Johnson, Irving Wohlfarth, Steven Glenday, Walter Allmand, Barry Greer, Barbara Elsen and Bob Foster (leader).
