Father’s Day Bike Ride
June 18, 1989
Sixteen of us shored up at South Eugene for the traditional 2½ hour, 15 mile Father’s
Day Bike Ride.
The route followed bike trails, bike lanes and quiet residential streets.
It included the Amazon and Willamette River bike trails; the Owosso and Knickerbocker Bridges.
The route is on level ground except for the hill going up to the Lodge.
On this last stretch up to the Lodge several riders opted for the most direct route and moderate
grades while most followed the leader on a route up through Hendricks Park which included a short
stretch of foot trail.
The trip ended at the Lodge with the usual superb pancake breakfast.
Note that the Eugene/Springfield area has a very good network of bike trails, bike ways plus four
bike/pedestrian bridges over the river.
Really quite unusual for a community of this size or for any city in the country.
To find a good comparison it may be necessary to go to Europe.
This outing has always been well attended. The sixteen this year was a record.
Those on the trip were Bob Devine, Barb Elsen, Dave Predeek, Gene Thaxton, Bea Fontana, Bill Eimstad,
Sig Otto, Corinne Hunt, John McManigal, Dick Moffitt, Norma Lockyear, Ned Baker, Herb Lee,
Mary Brenner, Liz Igl and Marriner Orum (leader).
