Fall Creek Trail
January 21, 1989
Thirteen of us “mustered” for the Fall Creek hike in a drizzle which showed no sign
Forecasts had called for showers but, despite optimistic remarks from some of those assembled,
I remained skeptical.
Transported by two cars and a van we arrived at the trailhead near the Dolly Varden Campground at 10:15.
This put us on the trail for our rainy trudge by 10:30.
Despite the drippy conditions, the footing was quite firm and relatively free of mud.
Several new trail impediments were encountered, how ever, due to recent storms and flooding.
One of the bridges was tilted at a rakish angle caused by undermining of the stringers at one end.
Our lunchtime objective was the Johnny Creek Campground which was reached a few minutes past noon.
Since it was still raining, we stood around a picnic table for our repast.
There being no motivation to dawdle over lunch, we started the return trek by 12:45 and were back
at the trailhead by 2:20.
We drove back via Jasper and Springfield reaching Eugene just after the U of 0 and Washington Huskies
matinee basketball game had finished.
The “unquenchable thirteen” were: Ewart Baldwin, Dorothy Burton, Jim Dunning, Barb Elsen,
Judith Engle, Bruce Fix, Sylvia Harvey, Miki Hutchison, Mary Millman, Barbara Spencer,
Karen Steinadle, Linda Wagner and leader Vernon Barkhurst.
