Florence Clam Dig

July 2, 1988

The trip departed promptly because, as advertized, Time and Tide wait for no one. After a pleasant but somewhat damp drive to Florence, we assembled first at the parking lot as you enter Florence and then at the Beach Park near the north jetty of the Siuslaw River. We suited up and headed for the beds, clam that is. After a short walk over rocks and beach we stopped for Piddock Clam identification. After getting acquainted with these burrowing rock clams, the group all succeeded in digging a limit. We also ran across a few cockrel clams, an almost keepable crab (He was a bit too small). An hour or so later we were heading home.

We had decided on coffee on the return trip but ended up in two different places due to miscommunication of the leader. All seemed to enjoy the outing and I’m sure some will be back after clams on the next low tide. On second thought I haven’t talked to the group AFTER they cleaned their clams.

Clammers were Doug Appel, Mary Ann Appel, Mary Bremner, Leona Devine, Karen Jenkins, Ann Launstein, Ike Launstein, Suzanne Steussy, and leader John Kocher.
