Waldport to Yachats

April 23, 1988

The Oregon Coast weather forecast (rain) was foreboding; the weather conditions (warm, broken clouds) for our hike were ideal. After a rest stop at the Adobe Motel in Yachats to leave our drivers’ shuttle car, we were at our “trailhead” in Waldport at 10:45. The tide was out and we hiked on a hard-packed sandy beach the entire way. We had a brief lunch stop just across Big Creek and we completed our beach stroll by 2:30. Some hikers investigated the tidal pools while others just got better acquainted waiting for the car to come back. We observed quite a few sea lions from the lookout above Sea Lion Cave and a few people saw several whales spouting on their trip back up the coast. After a leisurely frozen yogurt stop in Old Town Florence, we were back in Eugene by about 5:30. Beach hikers were Mary Lou Baelcke, Eaton Conant, Gladys Grancorvitz, Lee Hatch, Jeanie Holmes, Jeanette Holmes, Dee Johnson, Joe Lowry (leader), Mary Millman, Alys Riley, Sharon Ritchey, Fred Schepman, Carol Stern, Suzanne Steussy, Doreen Wagoner, Martha Welches, and Sue Wolling.
