S. Matthieu Lake

June 28, 1987

This group was ready for the high country. A good early hike to get close to the North Sister is a treat when it is June. The good news is that not only was there no snow but the mosquito population is small. The group picked up the Pacific Crest Trail on the highway and walked through the lava and a profusion of blooming penstemon. Beautiful! The hikers took the old trail past North Matthieu Lake and on to the lovely South Matthieu Lake for lunch. Part of the group walked on to Yapoah Crater, again finding little snow. The air was clear and Mt. Hood very visible. The return was via the Crest Trail, up high looking down on North Matthieu and the nearby mountains. Hikers included Carol Albaum, Barb Elsen, Judith Engle, Helen Fisher, Maxine Hall, Carolyn Kompanik, Carrie McClish, Shelly Melton, Dixie and Richard Minkler, Sharon Ritchie, Karen Seidel, Don Sullivan, Richard Sundt and leaders Mary Ellen West and Vi Johnson.
