N. Umpqua Paddle-Raft
June 27, 1987
The Fifth Annual North Umpqua Paddleraft “flotilla’ with Oregon River Experiences
(owned by Obsidians Bob Doppelt and Peggy Bloom) departed the put-in above Steamboat Creek with
guides John, Gary and Joe and “high spirits.”
The river was LOW and there was ample rock exposure (no, this wasn’t a climb!) to challenge
all hands on board.
The dozen miles from the put-in to the take-out at Susan Creek S.P. were navigated rather successfully
by the three respective crews of paddle experts.
Bathtub Rapid was portaged because of inadequate water flow.
The trip leader, who stayed safely on shore because of low tides, a recovering sore back and the
need to experience the healing waters of Umpqua Hot Springs, heard that three or four sailors took
unplanned swims during the downriver sojourn.
The hot sun dried out everyone by the end of the trip.
N. Umpqua rafters were Doris Allen, Mari Baldwin, Tim Cook, Mildred Dickey, Shirley Driver,
Judith Mainwaring-Forell, Gloria Gardner, Paul Hine, Vi Johnson, John & Trish Kocher,
Lloyd Mutinsky, Linda Sigismundi, Carol Stern, Inge & Leonard Tarantola, Kathy Zavella,
and Phyllis Zlatagura.
Joe Lowry says: “Next year, you’all come raft with us!!”
