Finley Wildlife Refuge
April 18, 1987
Our exploratory trip to Finley Wildlife Refuge began at McFadden Marsh where we observed many birds.
Next we drove up to the north entrance and walked around the historic Failing Cottage which used to
be the stage coach stop on the Applegate Trail.
Sloan found some owl pellets at the Red Barn.
At Cabell Marsh we saw some deer; however, the geese were gone.
New informational signs and booklets were available at the Woodpecker Trail.
Just as we settled down for lunch at the observation platform, a brief hail storm sent us scurrying
to our cars.
The sun came out shortly thereafter and we had a leisurely walk around Grey Creek Swamp.
A relaxing “stretch-out” along Beaver Pond ended a fun day at the Refuge for Glen Aplin,
Hayes Bressler, Tom Cawi, Susan Giordano, Sloan Heermance, Pauline Longstaff, Shirley Martin,
Sharon Ritchie, Robin Sexton, Pat Shaw, Joe Smith, Linda Wells, Jenny Wilson and leader Dot Leland.
