East Eugene UrbanJanuary 11, 1987On a sunny, spring-like morning, 20 urban hikers set off from the leader’s home on a very indirect route to the rhododendron gardens in Hendricks Park. The Christmas or Lenten rose was the only blooming flower discovered. From the gardens we walked south to the lodge, via trail, stairway, abandoned road and residential streets. A tour of the lodge was offered for newcomers while the rest of the group basked in the sun and snacked. From the Lodge we headed through the woods to the south end of Laurelwood Golf Course and then walked back along the fairways, staying well out of the way of sliced or hoked drives. We investigated some curious and lavish homes off Central Blvd. and then returned to the Villard Street trailhead. Hikers included Carol Albaum, Rientsjo Braunius (from the Netherlands who hiked with the Obsidians 30 years ago when she was at the U of 0), Hal Busby, Clair Cooley, Genie Currier, Ted Jozwiak, Bonnie Ledford, Ruth and Wayne Lill, Dixie and Rich Minkler, Lin Pierce, Leslie Proffit, Virginia Prouty, Lois Schreiner, Richard Summers, Suzanne Steussy, Linda Wells, Art Wild, and Karen Seidel (leader). |
