South SisterJune 20-21, 1987It ended up as a small but congenial group of climbers at the Devils Lake trailhead. We hiked up above Moraine Lake on a short, very steep trail and enjoyed a leisurely dinner and pleasant sunset. We were awakened occasionally that night to scattered showers and awoke the next morning to find that the top part of the mountain had disappeared. We waited til about 8:30 a.m. to see if the weather would commit itself. It finally cleared some and we decided to have a go at the summit. Two hours later we made the Red Ridge and the weather again had closed in. The winds on the ridge were rather severe and discretion being the better part of valor, we decided to return to camp. Despite the weather it was an enjoyable hike. The views of the changing cloud formations made up for the failure to stand on the summit. The small party consisted of Bob and Noami Emmich, Judith Engle and leader Rick Ahrens. |
