Champion Creek

December 20, 1986

The group met the leader in the parking of of ElGordo’s Restaurant in Cottage Grove and proceeded to Shirley’s house, where we left one car. A foggy beginning gave way to sun as we started off from the house. We walked up the jeep road that runs alongside Champion Creek. It is a beautiful walk with ferns, dripping moss, rocks, trees, lichen, waterfalls, mine entrances, beautiful scenery in general. We were fortunate to have Peggy along who knew so many names of the plants. We ate lunch at Golden Curry Creek. It was about 38 degrees there, but the sun was out and we really reveled in it. After lunch we decided to go higher up to seek any possible long distance view and more sun. We didn’t get a long view but we got some sun and a view of snow just above our level. We talked awhile in the sun. It felt so good. On the way down we did a little litter patrol as well as shining a flashlight into the mine entrances. Then back at Shirley’s house we had a spot of tea or hot chocolate to end the very pleasant outing. The hikers were: Vern Barkhurst, Susan Giordano, Corrine Hunt, Ted Jazwiak, Mary Millman, Virginia Prouty, and leader Shirley Froyd.
