South Matthieu Lake-Yapoah Crater

September 6, 1986

I posted the sign up sheet for this trip inside the YMCA but some people phoned me because the “Y” was closed for annual maintenance. Some were able to get inside the building, however. Well, to make a long story short, on the morning of the hike there were two separate lists of people who wanted to go and nearly double the number of participants that I had expected.

The weather was clear, very dry and moderately warm in the high country. At the trailhead near McKenzie Pass we broke up into a fast group and a slow group. We had a leisurely lunch at South Matthieu Lake and most of the people in the fast group continued on to Yapoah Crater while the others hiked the loop down to North Matthieu Lake where two of the more vigorous, hardy members of our group went swimming.

Those going to Yapoah Crater were Doris Allen, Dallas and Jack Cole, Bob Foster, Vi Johnson, Linda Wells, Bruce Wilson and Steve Wolfe. The other hikers were Karen and Paul Cohen, Beth and Eaton Conant, Clair Cooley, Nancie Fadeley, Gladys Grancorvitz, Audrey Malloy, Rich and Dixie Minkler, Bryant Mitchell, Fred Schepman, Lois Schreiner and leader Dave Predeek.
