Obsidian Loop

July 23, 1986

This all Obsidian, senior citizen, leisurely tour proceed from Frog Camp under blue skies and gentle air to Inspiration Point for a first snack stop. Instead, we all helped Bob Devine celebrate his birthday with song and with treats furnished by Leona. Leaving White Branch, we found more snow on the trail then is usual for late July and only the early spring flowers were in bloom including many lovely anemones (old man of the mountain). Above the cascading Obsidian Falls we scattered for an hour to explore the lakes, the springs, the obsidian flows or just to enjoy being on the Pacific Crest Trail. After meeting again at the large obsidian cairn, we completed the loop past sunshine meadow to White Branch.

As we started up the lava, Mary Millman fell. After a good rest it seemed unwise for her walk to Frog Camp. She was made comfortable with warm clothes and a sleeping bag loaned by passing backpackers. Four party members stayed with her, two went for help, and four hiked out. Miraculously, a family at Frog Camp had saddle horses and immediately end graciously offered to go back for her. By the time we reached town Mary was feeling much better but we did check with her doctor when we reached Springfield. She was checked then and later by her neurologist. Results of tests showed no stroke but probably the condition resulted from a combination of a viral infection, high altitude, and slight dehydration. Mary was given the green light to continue her normal activities. We are very grateful for this good news and thankful for the help given by the two families at the scene.

Obsidian loopers were Bob and Leona Devine, Gladys Grancorvitz, Catherine Jones, Dot Leland, Helen Lynch, Mary Millman, Lois Morse, Henrietta Richmond, Lois Schreiner, and leader Margaret Wiese.
