Olallie Lookout

July 13, 1986

Fortunately for an enthusiastic band of Sunday morning hikers, the fog that greeted us in the South Eugene parking lot dissipated early. Bright sun with intense blue sky became the order of the day for the drive up the McKenzie River to the Cougar Reservoir turn off, on through the return home. The hike to the top of Olallie Mountain was accomplished by all and the view north to a highly visible Mt. Hood and south to Diamond Peak was as exquisite as one could ask. After a leisurely lunch and some cat napping, we hiked part way down the trail to make the side trip to the Olallie Guard Station. Our expectation of finding Helen still in residence was denied but the steps of the Guard Station provided a welcomed pause where tales of Guard Station life, both real and imagined, circulated freely. Those enjoying the ever beautiful trip to Olallie Mountain were nonmembers Bruce Wilson, Joanne Haines, Kay Amunson and members Hal Busby, Miki Hutchison, Dot Leland, Doug Long, Elizabeth McMullin, Mary Millman, Karen Seidel and leader Lin Pierce.
