Grizzly PeakJune 29, 1986The Grizzly Peak 1986 expedition started off in cloudy weather, but Mt. Hood, the Sisters, Three Fingered Jack and most importantly Jefferson made guest appearances as we climbed and the sky opened. Most of the rhodies had faded along with the snow, but we saw many smaller wildflowers. As usual we met anglers going into and coming out of Pamelia Lake. Not a soul above Pamelia. Our very congenial group of hikers — slow, medium and fast — were all at the top for a one o’clock lunch (elevation 5799 ft). After lunch, we shared binoculars to pick out details on Mt. Jeff. On the descent we had a salamander-hunting and feet-wetting stop at Pamelia Lake. It’s a long ride but as one hiker said, “Grizzly Peak on a scale of 1-4 rates 5½. Hikers were Tom Cawi, Bob Foster, Lee Hatch, Jerry Maul, Anne Montgomery, Suzanne Steussy, Bert Tepfer (our only non-Obsidian), Leigh Williams and leaders Emmy Dale and Jan White. |
