Mt. JeffersonJuly 11-13, 1986Four of our party met at the Pamelia Lake trailhead Friday morning and hiked into Shale Lake. Ken Ball soled the hike a few hours later. Friday evening the mountain was socked in and the weather looked threatening but by 2:30 a.m. Saturday, the weather had cleared and the rest of the day was perfect for the climb — sunny, cool and no wind. Eight hours later at the Red Saddle we went two rope lengths across the untracked snow traverse and then climbed up the west face to the summit. Descent was by the same route. A large party from Seattle ascended from the east side ahead of us but took our suggestion to descend via our traverse to the Red Saddle which made our crossing easier and faster. Several nice glissades were made on the return down the mountain. Making up the party were first ascenters: Kathy Perkins, first try at Jeff; Ken Ball, second try, tenth peak with the Obsidians; Joe Turner, third try, tenth peak; Tim Cook, fourth try. Also in the group: Peggy Proctor, camp-watcher; Bud Proctor, leader. |
