Erma Bell Lakes

September 8, 1985

Twelve hikers left SEHS parking lot at 8:40 a.m., arrived Skookum Creek Campground at 10:40 a.m. Weather gray. Introductions revealed one physician (retired) and three nurses—we really plan ahead for emergencies. Left on trail at 11 a.m., arrived Lower Erma Bell at 11:36, left lower E.B. 11:48, arrived Middle E.B. at noon, left Middle E.B. at 12:03 p.m., arrived upper E.B. at 12:20, left Upper E.B. at 12:27, back at Middle E.B., 12:40. Lunch in a pleasant campsite on shore of Middle E.B., then left at 1:30 p.m., arrived back at Skookum Creek at 2:20 p.m.

We sang Happy Birthday to Helen Lynch during lunch stop. Weather stayed cloudy—rain and hail fell for a few minutes as we left Middle E.B. By the time we reached Skookum Creek Campground, the sun was trying to peek through—it was shining by the time we reached Eugene.

Sights and Experiences:

Wildlife — 2 slugs, several birds, 2 ground squirrels;
Flora — various kinds of berries — a few wild flowers having a final fling.
“Mom” had only one piece of rhubarb pie — we declined to wait for more pies to bake, so one hiker got the one slice of pie, two other droolers had ice cream cones.
This was a fine trip. It was a very congenial group consisting of Evelyn Blackwell, Norville Butler, Kathleen Eldred, Barb Elsen, Judy Forrel, Ferne Kellow, Helen Lynch, Mary Millman, Virginia Prouty, Dorothy Turner, and leaders Joella and Jack Ewing.
