Collier Cone

July 21, 1985

Our group of seven left Eugene at about 0700 and arrived at the trailhead at 0910. The weather was warm and the predicted rain did not appear. The mosquitoes were out in force for the first two miles of the trail. There were a few snow patches left. We saw a good variety of wildflowers with lupine being almost everywhere. We stopped for lunch at 1330, short of Collier Glacier View. We all agreed that we had come more than the advertised 7 miles. After lunch we strolled to the viewpoint to see the much-shrunken glacier. We started back about 1430 and the fast hikers had time for a quick dip in North Matthieu Lake. The leader brought up the rear arriving back at the trailhead at 1815. We reached Eugene at 2030, thankful that it was still daylight. The party included Carol Horvath, Jack and Lana Lindstram, John Pilafian, Dave Predeek, Margo Spielman and leader Joel McClure.
