July 21, 1985

Ten people signed up for this hike, but five cancelled due to the heat and one failed to show up. The four remaining heat-resistant hikers, all Obsidians, left the parking lot around 0800 in very pleasant weather conditions. Starting up the trail around 1000 we immediately entered the cool surroundings of the tall forest. Unfortunately, the trail was poorly maintained and we climbed over several fallen trees. There were numerous wild flowers but we were a few weeks too late to catch this trail at its best.

As we climbed, there were tantalizing views of the Cascades through the trees. The full panorama was finally revealed when we reached the rocky viewpoint on top of the middle pyramid. There we ate lunch and enjoyed the view and eventually napped awhile in the sun. Although it was noon and we were in full sunshine, we remained quite comfortable due to a light breeze blowing across the rocks.

After a leisurely hike down, we arrived at the trailhead around 1400 and were back in town by 1610. As we descended into the valley and approached town, the weather became hotter and hotter, making us thankful for a cool day in the mountains. Hikers on this all-Obsidian trip were Velma Shirk, Robin Steussy, Suzanne Steussy and Dan Bates, leader.
