Old McKenzie Wagon Road

June 29, 1985

Group met at 8 a.m. and was ushered to Leaburg by Lois Schreiner where other members of the party were picked up. We drove to the top of Dead Horse Grade and hiked down, below Alder Springs. The upper part of the road has not been cleared, however the lower portion proved quite interesting and mostly free of obstructions. Of special interest along the way is the wrecked 1935 Plymouth at one grade’s foot, what is left of an old cabin and dump as well as the interesting rock grades made of lava chunks. The trip was completed with a look at Proxy Falls.

Wagon road hikers were Harold Busby, Barb Elsen, Bradley Helms, Daniel, Philip and Steven Johnson, Erma Johnson, Eugene Johnson, Helen Lynch, John, Lenore and Steven McManigal, Lin Pierce, Alys Riley, Karen Seidel, Lois Schreiner, Anne Svarverud, Eric Svarverud, Ethel Weltman, and Wilma and Frank Moore, leader.
