North Umpqua Paddle Raft

June 22, 1985

The day was sunny, the temperature was 80°, and the water was “cool” for the Third Annual North Umpqua paddleraft trip from Steamboat Creek to Susan Creek State Park. Thirty-five experienced, neophyte, and “in-between” paddlers negotiated Steamboat Falls, Bathtub, Upper and Lower Island, Sleeper and many other somewhat lesser rapids on the day’s float down the cold, clear, sparkling North Umpqua River east of Glide. Oregon River Experiences guide service (owned by Obsidian Bob Doppelt) was our host and guides Jeannie, John, Dean, Todd and Richard expertly captained our five rafts with seven paddlers each on this challenging, exciting and wet run on one of Oregon’s most fun whitewater day trips. Join us next year or come on the September 21st run on the upper McKenzie River.

North Umpqua paddlers were Mel Bankoff, Jane Beeghley, Ted Briles, Dick Cross, Marti Davis, Linda Eaton, Barbara Elsen, Barbara Fishleder, Patricia Hawkins, Corinne Hunt, John Jacobsen, Judy and Laura Jenkins, Vi Johnson, Joan Keigher, Don and June King, John Kocher, Bonnie Ledford, Helen Lynch, Betty Macy, Allison McKenzie, Ann Moore, Craig Nelson, Virginia Prouty, Parker “Left Oar” Riddle, Fred Schepman, Suzanne Steussy, Jane Tucker, Dorothy Turner, Linda Wells, Mary Ellen West, Leigh Williams, Janice Wilson and leader Joe Lowry.
