McDowell Creek

March 30, 1985

Out of 15 sign ups 9 hikers showed up and left in 2 cars at 8:40 a.m. Driving to Sweet Home, McDowell Creek is 8 miles NE through Pleasant Valley. Starting at upper trailhead we followed the stream then crossed the bridge and the trail leading to a second bridge at the foot of Royal Falls. Some stepping stones took us to the top of these falls and viewing area. A short distance up the creek another bridge took us to the opposite side and a trail which offered the first trilliums and 2 skunk cabbages. These being the only flowers blooming at this date. One very minute lily could not be identified. This trail took us to the paved road below from where a second thundering falls can be found by taking a trail across the road to Crystal Pool and Majestic Falls. A bridge and a few steps led us to the top of the falls and another short trail ends up at a small picnic area. By this time the mist was getting heavier and we called time for lunch. From here we descended back to the road and another trail to the parked cars. One car taking off for Rumba Creek(?) and one around Green Peter Dam.

The area was new to the whole party: Tom Ellis, Todd Fineman, Erik Furchmer, Alex Furstenberg, Bobby Kalbfleisch, Gary Marx, Marge Mountainsong, Linda Wells and Paula Vehrs, leader.
