McKenzie River Trail, Lower Section

February 24, 1985

We missed the sunny Saturday by one day, but the weather was not as inclement as we expected as the pouring rain we experienced on the drive to the trailhead ceased shortly after starting the hike. The trail, was dotted with patches of snow for the first hour, then the snow was dotted with patches of bare trail for the second hour. Our tramping took us through snow that ranged from half an inch to six inches deep. We followed recent footprints in the snow for about 30 minutes, but after that we had to break our own trail. We were well prepared for the weather so were comfortable in the occasional rain and somewhat cool temperature. Our lunch stop on the river bank was about 25 minutes beyond the Paradise Campground crossing. From there we hiked another 15 minutes, turning around about 10 minutes beyond the “forbidden bridge” (folks who have been on this hike in former years will know where that is). Mercifully, a light rain only showered on us intermittently; we were well protected by the trees. It rained a little harder as we approached the cars on the return, but by the time we reached the hike’s end it stopped and the sun came out, finding a veiled break in the clouds. We had left the cars at 10 a.m. and returned by 2:15 p.m.

On the way up we were momentarily stopped at Leaburg Lake by several Canada geese sauntering across the road. On the way home we stopped at the Village eatery for pie, soup and chili—everyone didn’t have all three. We arrived back in Eugene at 4 p.m. Those enjoying this late winter tramp were Dee Bray, Genie Currier, Barb Elsen, Clara Emlen, Judy Forrell, Helen Lynch, Doral Robinson, and leader Lois Schreiner. Lest you think there was discrimination on this trip, not so—no men singed up. We did have a case of three nonmembers signing to go that didn’t show up; didn’t inform the leader of their cancellation either.
