Hoodoo to Suttle Lake

January 14, 1984

At Santiam Pass the weather was quite chilly with a strong east wind. Snow was falling and there was an accumulation of fine powder more than half a foot deep. Before skiing we shuttled all but one of our vehicles to Suttle Lake. From the Ray Benson parking area our group of 12 skied east along the fire line until we came to a marked trail which took us to Island Lake where we stopped for lunch. With the temperature down at 20°F, we didn’t stop long to rest and soon continued east. As we descended towards Corbett State Park, there was only a thin layer of powder on a concrete hard base which made skiing very difficult at times. Our 8-mile ski tour ended at Suttle Lake where we warmed up in the lodge with hot soup, coffee and pie.

Our ski party consisted of Norm Benton, Emmy Dale, Bob and Leona Devine, Dick Hildreth, Bea Fontana, Wes Prouty, Gene Thaxton, Nancy Schafer, Ellen Traner, Jan White, and leader Dave Predeek.
