Coburg Hills (Old Baldy)

December 16, 1984

“Old Baldy” in the Coburg Hills, via Black Canyon Road, was Sunday’s destination for four hikers (out of 10 who signed up!). Unpromising weather at the start turned nicer as the day went on, though our lunch stop on top was extremely cold and brief! Surprisingly, good all-around views were enjoyed. The return was by way of (up) Lockard Road to a sunny rest spot at the leader’s favorite Coburgs meadow. One final plunge down a little-used track returned us to McKenzie View Drive and but a short road-mile back to the parked car. Some moist-underfoot spots were encountered (as promised!), but the notorious and feared cow pasture on Old Baldy’s better-known southern route was completely ignored this day. Obsidians Gary Marx and leader John Cecil, and nonmembers Diane Mayers and Diane Schechter enjoyed the soggy excursion.
