Three Sisters Backpacking

September 8-13, 1984

Camped at Lava Camp Lake trailhead Saturday evening. Hiked down to Soap Creek on Sunday. Weather sunny, but freezing at night. Day-hiked to Chambers Lakes. Met an enthusiastic skier from San Francisco. He was climbing Middle Sister (above Camp Lake) in ski boots. He said the snow was excellent.

Camped at Green Lakes Tuesday. Weather windy, partly cloudy and cold at night. At Mesa Creek we met a Pacific Crest thru hiker from Vancouver., B.C. He had started in Mexico on Memorial Day and was on his way to the Canadian border. Wednesday we camped at Linton Meadows. I talked to a Sierra Club Llama Trek group. Leaders were from Brownsville. It’s a 6-day trip with eight llamas covering 25 miles and costing $450.

Hiked back to Lava Camp Lake on Thursday. The weather was good and we saw quite a few day hikers. We could see Mt Hood and Mt Adams. The Sierra Club charges $190 for a similar backpacking trip. Since it was so cold this year, I may go a little earlier next year. Only two were on this trip—Judith Engle and leader KC Kraft.
