Lucky Boy Mine

June 24, 1984

This was a large, but fun group of gold and sun seekers that ambled up Roaring Quartz Creek, and amazingly had success at both sun seeking and gold finding. The enthusiasm of guests from Germany and from the Peoples Republic of China added much to the trip. A special thanks again this year to our gold expert, Troy Emmett, for his explanations of the old equipment at the mines, the panning demonstrations that really produced gold, and for bringing with him a sizeable collection of nuggets, gold dust and ore samples. Hope he can be available again next year. One hiker found the remains of a miner’s shovel circa 1910 that I’m sure he will find useful in his doctor business. Several of us were fortunate enough to view a mama quail and her following of newly hatched tiny bits of fluff. This trek through millions of flowers and wild strawberries was officially ended at the trailhead to enable our out-of-country friends and other groups to go their separate ways and see more of Oregon on the drive home. A fine day by anyone’s standards!

Hikers were Brigette, Dominik and Mirabel Bausinger, Dan Bates, Evelyn Blackwell, Harold Busby, Judith Engle, Troy Emmett, Gladys Grancorvitz, Jane Hackett, Marge Kocher, Helen Lynch, Jeanne Morris, Lin Pierce, Clarence and Dorothy Scherer, Hans Tschersich, Paula Vehrs, Robert Walden, He Li Xiong, and Gene Thaxton, leader.
