North Umpqua Raft Trip

June 23, 1984

The weather for our second annual paddlerafting trip on the North Umpqua River from Steamboat to Susan Creek State Park was sunny and hot just as the leader had ordered. Shorts and T-shirts were the order of the day rather than woolens and raingear as mentioned in the Oregon River Experiences information sheet. This year thirty-three paddlers, about divided between experienced and novice paddlers, comprised our biggest rafting group to date. ORE was prepared with six rafts captained by ORE owner (an Obsidian), Bob Doppelt and guides Stan, Ginny Sue, Dan, Don and Steve. Even though Steamboat, the first major rapid, was just downstream from our put-in, all boats, through various combinations of skill and luck, made it through . . . frontwards, backwards, even sideways. After a superb “buffet” lunch provided by ORE, we proceeded all too quickly through Bathtub, Sleeper, Island and many other unnamed, but challenging stretches of white water until all too quickly our trip was over at the Susan Creek take-out.

Thoroughly wet and stimulated paddlerafters were Doris Allen, Pat Baer, Gary Brothers, Carl Bybee, Walt Davis, Mary Christoferson, Barbara Clapp, Tom and Janet Tillman, Agnes Gillman, Linda Gunn, Judith Engle, Lee Hatch, Corinne Hunt, Chris Holden, Joan Keigher, Jan Kenter, Marcia Kessler, John Kocher, Bonnie Ledford, Dorothy Leland, Steven Loescher, Glenn Morris, Betty Obie, Tom Woxell, Linda Rockwell, Gene Thaxton, Dorothy, Olga and Tom Turner, Allan and Kathleen Wicker, and leader Joe Lowry. Next year, perhaps, you’ll come with us on one of Oregon’s most exciting one-day white water runs. It’s wild!
