Cone Peak

June 9, 1984

We laughed when we read the signs on the Clear Lake Cutoff and the Santiam Highway toward Albany for they said to carry tire chains! On June 9? Imagine our surprise when we found it was snowing hard on the Santiam where we were to begin our hike to Cone Peak!! Not knowing how much might accumulate while we were hiking, we decided to play it safe and retreat to lower ground. We gathered at Coldwater Cove Campground and set out on the McKenzie River Trail with Carmen Reservoir as our destination. Back from there after lunch in brief sunshine, we went on to the Great Spring at the North end of Clear Lake. More sunshine! This turned out to be a great day with 11 very congenial and flexible people but we all want to try Cone Peak another time. After this experience, my recommendation is that next year Cone Peak should be scheduled later in June.

Hikers were newcomers Andrea Feight and Anne Pflug, and Obsidians Bob Emmich, Bob Foster, Helen Hughes, Miki Hutchison, Dot Leland, Fred Schepman, Paula Vehrs, Margaret Wiese and leader Catherine Jones.
