Lower John Day Raft

June 1-3, 1984

The third annual John Day Float & Swim trip was a great success. We had six rafts and fifteen people. Four rafts were owned by Obsidians. So the club is slowly moving into river rafting. Only one person went into, the water this year. This happened when another raft tried to help Tom Donnelly after he demonstrated that old wooden oars won’t last forever.

Our weather was great for the most part. We saw no other parties on the river. The leader saw more wild life than he has seen on the last several trips. Our meals were divided among different members of the party and each was a delight. It was great entertainment watching Bea & Gene prepare a delicious spaghetti dinner in a wind storm. Their results were outstanding as were all the meals. Lots of good food and fellowship. No moon at night, but you could almost touch the stars. Thanks to a good group for a wonderful time.

Rafting, star-gazing and cooking were Obsidians Margaret Crosland, Bob Dark (leader), Tom Donnelly, Bea Fontana, Joe Lowry, Glenn Meares, Chris Shuraleff, Gene Thaxton, and Ed Trione, and nonmembers Julie, Kim, and Seth Christianson, Barbara Janosik, Scott Lowry and John Levy.
