Ski Tour around Broken TopApril 16-17, 1983This trip was billed as strenuous, and proved to be that, with 20+ miles of skiing and several thousand feet elevation gain. However, it was also beautiful, fun, picturesque, and exciting. We were on the trail out of Dutchman Flat by l0:00 a.m. Saturday, lunched by Ball Butte, and crossed the high (8200') col between Broken Top and Broken Hand early afternoon on a warm, windless, crystal clear day. Outstanding views in all directions. Skied and slid down the north side onto Bend glacier and played around on nice slopes before camping on a ridge above Golden Lake. The next morning a warm but brisk wind tried to blow a tent (with Jan inside) off the ridge, but failed. Another nice day Sunday took us over the frozen Green Lakes, around Cayuse Crater, down the dreaded watertower route, and out to a late salad bar lunch in Bend. Home by 5:30 p.m., sunburned and sore. A highly recommended trip for vigorous skiers. Along were Jan Gallenstein, Lee Lashway, Susan Watkins, and leader Bill McWhorter. |
