Maxwell ButteFebruary 5, 1983We started from Santiam Lodge parking lot on the trail that goes to Berley Lakes. We had beautiful sunny and clear skies the entire day. The trail was in surprisingly good condition, considering the lack of snow lately. There was a good trail all the way to Maxwell Butte although we did make our own way up the butte itself. Sandra and Tom stopped for lunch on top as Tim, Herb, Sue and Gary skied around the rim and in the small bowl on top of the butte and then joined the others for lunch. The pleasure of basking in the sun and enjoying lunch was short-lived as the ruthless leader led his charges back to the parking lot (as it was approaching 2:00 p.m.). The ski back was a little more challenging as many skiers had removed much of the good snow, leaving only a crusty hard-packed trail for the last mile or so. It certainly was an enjoyable trip with great views of Three Fingered Jack and Washington and Sisters to the south. We were back in Eugene by 6:30 p.m., some quite tired but all recharged in spirit by the Cascade’s great outdoors. Skiers were Tim Cook, Sandra Larsen, Herb McMurtry, Tom Woxell, Susan & Gary Doolittle, leader. |
