Craig Lake

August 24, 1983

Craig Lake is at its very best in late August. Our party of twelve hiked two hours from the Crest trailhead to reach the lake which sits on top of a butte quite near Three Fingered Jack. Glorious views, good fishing, and perfect swimming. There were no other hikers at Craig Lake although we heard that camping at Santiam Lake is very popular just now.

Fred Schepman deserves a special thanks for helping find the somewhat obscure game trail which leads to the lake. This trail appears to be a route to Berley Lakes, but we picked it up out in the open fields of lupine up past the site of the old Jack Shelter. Our Wednesday group included Norm Benton, Kevin Clark, Gladys Grancorvitz, Judy Langstrom, Margaret Kemp, Philip Lynch, Grace Payne, John Powell, Rachel Powell, Fred Schepman, Jan White, and Emmy Dale, leader.
